Blower Fan Noise Driving Workers Crazy
The Situation: A contractor is looking for a solution to solve a noise problem. His customer has a machine in its production line that uses four small blower fans to create vacuum. The machine uses the negative suction created by these blowers to fold plastic bags on the production line. The machine operators were complaining because of the fan noise and they could not communicate with each other while the blowers were in operation. At its highest level, the customer measured the noise to be 105 dBa.
The blower motor is specifically developed for applications that require high airflow, high motor speed, and medium pressure. The fan and housing are designed and optimized to deliver up to 238 CFM and 70.4 inches of sealed vacuum.
Currently, the blower fans are mounted underneath the production machine which does not provide the easiest access for maintenance. The area under the machine is approximately 5’ wide x 6’ long x 3’ high. The goal is to reduce the decibel reading as much as possible and to improve the maintenance access.

The Solution: Engineer, John Larson, designed a system with 2″ absorption silencers, 4″ thick attenuation flat foam, and a 6’L x 3’W x 3’H base-mounted aluminum sound enclosure with a 350 CFM ventilation fan mounted on the back side of the enclosure.

The absorption silencers reduce the high frequency pulsations. The foam attenuates sound waves by absorbing the noise which reduces the amplitude of the waves. The base-mounted sound enclosure allows for easy installation and maintenance. Aluminum construction is lightweight and corrosion resistant. The silencers were installed vertically in order to discharge upward through a drop ceiling and dissipate heat. The final noise level is around 75 dBa.
Vent Silencer Solution
The Issues: Testing of Turbine Compressor packages prior to being shipped requires the package to be run at full operational mode and capacity. A 40ft discharge pipe and horizontal vent stack faces away from the testing area, but in the direction of neighboring businesses. A huge amount of air volume discharges at increased velocity, causing increased levels of high octave band frequencies. These created disturbing noise conditions for neighboring facilities, which caused the customer to be sighted for noise levels above 85 dBA and be charged with a time frame to remedy the problem.
The Requirement: A vent silencer to eliminate the generated noise created by the turbine compressor, as this noise could still be identified by neighboring businesses.
The client required the discharge air and noise to be redirected and somewhat contained, while also reducing the noise level to meet the 85 dBA or below city requirement.
The Design: We suggested turning the discharge piping and vent silencer downwards towards the ground. An open top, 10 ft. tall, four sided enclosure surrounding the silencer discharge enables the discharged air to vent out 360 degrees without constriction. Solid closed cell foam on the walls of the enclosure forces the displaced air and any leftover noise into the foam, preventing noise from being directed towards any surrounding establishments.
The Solution: After installation, initial versus final tests proved the customer’s requirements were met; discharged air noise was limited to below, and discharge was redirected away from neighboring businesses.
The customer has been very pleased with the results and the new system is utilized weekly for testing purposes.

Rotary Blower Discharge Silencer Benefits
Rotary blower discharge silencers are some of the most essential components to high performance in all the blower systems. Most people believe that the discharge does not create a lot of noise as compared to the inlet, which is not correct. The discharge noise and high frequency pulsations are common at the outlet and can be responsible for the tremendous destruction of systems operating under very high pressure and discharge velocities. The reason behind this is that the above mentioned components are normally contained in a closed system.
The positive rotary blower discharge silencer does not compress the medium it carries from the blower inlet to the discharge side of the blower. The compression phase takes place when the line pressure builds up at the open port. At this stage, compressed air is pushed into the line. This action results in very steep wave forms that are normally destructive to piping any other equipment, if not well taken care of. There are some very important design considerations in building these systems including discharge displacement and speed. A proper evaluation of these two parameters results in a system that reduces the havoc that would otherwise be caused if they were overlooked.
Benefits of Rotary Blower Discharge Silencers
They help in curbing the effects of the air flow involved. This is because the pulsation and vibration caused by the air flow out of a constricted area is very high, and if not well handled, the destruction caused can be very costly. Having rotary blower discharge silencers installed by Pathfinder Systems will help a great deal in allowing the system to operate in harmony.
Secondly, high frequency air flow causes a lot of noise and vibration which can be a nuisance to the surrounding. The main function of the rotary blower discharge silencers is to reduce these high frequencies by harmonizing the pressure surge of the gas exiting the outlet to the open, in the case of geothermal or any other steam outlet.
Silencers also increase the accuracy and efficiency of the system. The noises and vibration caused in the case where silencers are not used is, as a result of turbulence and back pressure, resulting from the air which is passed through a medium, which in the process, tends to cool down causing medium imbalances. If the medium was to be used without being passed through a silencer, issues of inaccuracy would arise. Rotary Blower Discharge Silencers are used to correct this variation.

Positive Displacement Blower Sound Enclosure Advantages
The advantages of positive displacement blower sound enclosure
There are many laws today that seek to regulate the noise produced by industrial product lines. Moreover, many workers have filed lawsuits claiming hearing damage due to the noise caused by the machines that they work around. These two factors make it necessary for manufacturing plants to invest in sound enclosures. One of the machines in the line that requires such a device is the positive displacement blower.
Effectiveness
The sound enclosures for the positive displacement blowers are able to contain the noise produced by the machine. It can contain this sound until only 85 dBA (decibels) are audible. This results in a very comfortable noise level. When the audible sound is this low, a manufacturing plant can be located near a residential community area and not cause discomfort for the neighbors. The sound enclosures for the PD blowers are able to reduce the audible noise from the machine by 60% to 80% due to their specialized construction. The enclosures are constructed in such a way that they have an independent frame, steel panels that are removable and modular, as well as an exhaust fan and air intake that is silenced.
Ease of installation
Your Positive displacement blower sound enclosure can be built according to your measurements and specifications by Pathfinder Systems Inc. Our technicians can discuss the design with you to make sure your specifications are adhered to. We will then construct the enclosure for you. You can also purchase a ready made sound enclosure. Armed with the measurements of your PD blower, you can go and shop for one that fits your positive displacement blower sound enclosure. In both these cases, the professional technicians from Pathfinder Systems can install these for you.
High Quality Construction
The positive displacement blower sound enclosures are built so that they will be durable and long lasting. They are built out of durable materials such as stainless steel. They are also constructed in such a way that they can be installed at the site easily. The enclosure is made with a modular design. This means that it is constructed out of panels that can be fit together on site. This type of construction means that it is easy to move the enclosure, as well. All that is required is dismantling and reconstruction at the target site.
These enclosures also reduce the pulsation from the PD blower. They can also be constructed with doors, windows and access panels. This is an excellent result of the modular design used to construct the positive displacement blower sound enclosures. The presence of panels does not make the enclosures any less effective. The edges of the panels are lined with seals. These seals are high performance and prevent any leakage of noise. If the enclosure has windows, they have tight gaskets on them. They are fitted with frames that promote silence outside the enclosure. Despite the need to completely seal the enclosure, ventilation is added into its design. The enclosure can be painted or imprinted with a logo that you desire. Thus, it markets your manufacturing plant and prevents the loud noise caused by the Positive Displacement Blower Sound Enclosure.
